THE URBAN EXPRESSIONS FESTIVAL
Stemming from the initial desire to offer a hip-hop scene to teenagers and adults while trying to open up this event to a more family-oriented public in a friendly atmosphere, the idea is to encourage people to change their preconceived notions and show them that hip-hop does not necessarily equate with slurs, violence or drugs.
The Urban Expressions Festival is an event organised by A.S.B.L. Emergence XL in collaboration with the commune of Ixelles, the XL'Jeunes Youth Centre, the Ixelles Youth Council and other associations active in the youth and urban expression sector.
This event represents one of the rare hip-hop scenes in Brussels and is widely sought after year after year to allow the expression of numerous young Brussels-based artists, whether they are confirmed talents or newcomers.
THE URBAN EXPRESSIONS FESTIVAL'S OBJECTIVE
The festival aims to attract a public of young families to enhance the positive image of young people by encouraging various forms of expression, promoting the emergence of new urban disciplines that are still little known and disseminating them to a wider public. We're talking about "Yarn bombing" (street knitting), "Street dance", "Fixies community" (bicycles), "Guerilla gardening", etc.
This project has an important integration value for the young people involved, fostering the development of critical and active citizenship through the discovery and learning of a variety of cultural practices and the recognition that comes with it.
We are also innovating the way the festival is organised by involving young people directly in the decision-making process, involving them in this project, which is intended for them right from the start.
